In a behind-the-scenes trailer hyping The Suicide Squad, John Cena describes his vigilante character Peacemaker as "a douchey Captain America."
John Cena describes his The Suicide Squad character Peacemaker as a douchey Captain America. After months of anticipation, DC FanDome finally saw the big reveal of the entire character run down for James Gunn’s sequel to Suicide Squad
Among the major revelations from that roll call announcement was the news of Idris Elba’s mysterious character, who turns out to be the villainous Bloodsport, a mercenary known for hunting Superman. It was also revealed that Peter Capaldi is playing The Thinker, another bad guy from DC lore. And it was also finally confirmed that Cena plays Peacemaker, a pacifist who somewhat paradoxically is willing to kill in order to create peace.

Peacemaker actually has an interesting place in DC lore, having starred in his own Charlton Comics series before being acquired by DC and later showing up in titles like Flashpoint Blue BeetleDoomsday ClockThe L.A.W.Justice League InternationalThe Suicide SquadSuicide Squad
Now that character details on Peacemaker have been revealed, it makes a lot of sense that Gunn would cast Cena, an actor who obviously has the physical size and presence to play this super-violent vigilante and also the comedic chops to portray someone who seems like they’re on a completely bizarre and foolishly single-minded mission. The “douchey Captain America” idea indeed sounds like it’s right up Gunn’s alley when it comes to bringing a comedic flavor to the comic book movie genre, as he did so memorably with the Guardians of the Galaxy
It remains to be seen how big a part Peacemaker will ultimately play in The Suicide Squad, and indeed Gunn has warned fans not to get too attached to every character, a hint that a lot of people will die in the movie. But Cena’s Peacemaker, no matter how much screen time he gets, certainly sounds like a fun and decidedly deadly addition to the movie’s very diverse and clearly offbeat cast of misfits.
