Educating teens about the perils of sexting, instead of punishing them with criminal charges, is favoured amongst the US public, a poll has found.

The survey sought the views of adults about children and teens sending sexually explicit, nude, or semi-nude photos via text message (known as sexting) and how those who are caught doing so should be punished.

Of those surveyed, 81% believed education programs and counseling to be appropriate punishment and 75% also supported comunity service; this is compared to only 20% who believed sexting teens should be prosecuted under sexual abuse laws.
